I know I said this before, but if you don't read Tess Gerritson's blog, you should.
This morning I opened it up to find a post entitled "You Can't Please All Readers All the Time" - it's all about writing for yourself and not for others.
If you write, you should read it.

Interesting point, one that I think is a lot more valid for someone who's a published, best-selling novelist than someone who's trying to break into print.
Of course you should write stories that you like and think you can develop well and mean something to you, but to completely ignore a potential audience seems a little naive. Or luxurious.
The first and only story I've sold has way more sex than any other romance I've written and submitted, and I intentionally marketed it that way. Coincidence that it's the first one that got a bite?
