Music Monday: The Movie That Molded My Life

Found this at Jen's and couldn't resist playing along today!

Yesterday, I mentioned that roller skating was one of those things that reminded me of my childhood. I should amend that and say it reminded me of my high school years. Until I was in high school, I didn't know how to skate. At all.

What inspired me to learn at such an advanced age?

A movie. I watched this movie over, and over, and over (seriously--those were the days when you payed for a movie and could sit through as many showings as you wanted, so I went in the morning and stayed all day, every day for like two weeks!). I wore leg-warmers, and tore up a skirt and weaved ribbons into combs for my hair. I memorized the poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge (wow! Is it ever LONG). I wanted to BE the heroine of this movie. And the only way I could BE her is if I learned to skate. So I did--and quite proficiently, too.

What movie? A classic... I'm shocked you have to ask.

Xanadu.

Here is the classic climactic number from the show--and, oh my word--could this be any more typically 80s? Look at the clothes, the hair...:

Thanks for all your well wishes about my germ-fest. My cold is speeding through its cycle... it seems that, although the oil of oregano isn't stopping me from being sick, it's making me less sick. I've had only mild symptoms thus far and the cycle I go through is taking one day for each thing. Day one: sore throat. Day two: stuffy nose.

So far so good. If things hold true to the usual course, I'll have the coughing today and then tomorrow or Weds I'll be all done. I'm good with a three or four day, mild cold.

I got the cutest picture of Dakota yesterday... so will share with you here... Awwww:

You Are A Realist

When it comes to romance, you tend to take a realistic approach.
You believe that love takes time, and it's something you have to work hard for.
A bit cynical, over the top romance tends to get under your skin.
Your heart is difficult to win ... but it's totally worth it.

I love these quizzes on romance, because it seems I'm cynical. Why the HECK is it romance that I write, then? Hmmm????

I'm weird.

So glad you're feeling all right. I'm thinking I just may get some of that oil of oregano, just in case the crud comes calling.

Feel better!

Oh, you would have SO loved my job in late high school/early college. I worked for a place called Light Lab, and we did the disco lighting for Saturday Night Fever, Xanadu, and all those big disco skating palaces. And we also got free skates from our partner... Chicago Skate Company. What you *wouldn't* have liked were all the grope-y older guys who came in and thought the staff were there for the asking. UGH. I'll have to write up those days sometime. Continue to feel better!

I curse you, from the bottom of my dark, dark heart.

Why, you may ask?

I can NOT get that freaking song out of my head. Xanadau la, la, la, la, la, Xanadau ...

Gah.

OMG - totally 80s! So scary...what were we all thinking back then??

Gotta love Olivia Newton-John, though!

There are some things about the 80s that I totally miss. Like being skinny and old enough to go out dancing. *g*

Where was Dakota in that picture? She's so cute!

I'm glad you're not feeling too bad.

I Am A Romantic

You life your life like a fairy tale... or at least you try to.
Living for magical moments, you believe there's only one true love for you.
Love is the most important thing in your life, and you don't take it for granted.
Your perfect match loves to be in love as much as you do!

My very first date we went to the roller rink!

I never saw Xanadu. And I never liked roller skating because I was too much of a klutz to do it, but it was cool to go to the skating rinks. I prefered to skate on the carpet around the rink.

I never saw the movie, and after watching the clip I shan't be rushing out to get it either!

However, I confess, I spent HOURS trying to sing like Olivia. Kinda tough since she's a soprano and I'm a died in the wool alto.

I hope you're feeling better soon.

You Are A Realistic Romantic

It's easy for you to get swept away by romance...
But you've done a pretty good job keeping perspective.
You're still taken in by love poems and sunsets
You just don't fall for every dreamy pick up line!
