Success and Failure in Pillar Place

"I love the man that can smile in trouble, that can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflections." - Thomas Paine

In Pillar Place 2008, we had our first success and our first failure. We released the butterfly who hatched yesterday with great success. It was a female (you can tell from the thickness of the black lines on their wings, as well as whether or not there are spots on the lower wing. Illustrations can be found here, if you're interested).

Sadly, it seemed one of our pillars was ill -- possibly with that bacterial whoosie I talked about here. S/he spent the last day vomiting green goo (because my dog vomiting wasn't enough), not eating, and periodically writhing about on the bottom of the container. We gave it a full 24 hours, but s/he was clearly not right. I've raised umpteen monarchs, and have never seen one behave in this way. DD and I made the decision to humanely euthanize it (we put it in the freezer). After a full night in the deep freeze, DD buried it in the milkweed garden and made a little stone cross on its grave.

===============================

Dd is feeling better! Yay! No more loose stools, and she didn't yack at all yesterday. We're doing a little dance of joy.

DD, also, is feeling better. Phew.

===============================

I wrote yesterday. Not much, but boy did it ever feel good!

I got a few more entries into the "Kitchen Matches" contest, but am dying for more. Have YOU entered yet? Come on, we all have a kitchen disaster, yes?
