A murder of the English language, that is.
I have to admit to being all worked up about something. I'd planned on posting about this a week ago, but I couldn't (re)find the link on the news page I read, but then, kindly, Miss Snark thoughtfully posted it for me - Push for simpler spelling persists .
ARGH!
One thing that folks don't seem to understand (that the spelling bee competitors do) is that much of our language is derived from OTHER languages and spelling it phonetically just. won't. work.
I've said it before and I'll say it on my death bed: Our kids are not stupid.
I learned to spell. I also learned to recognize words that I consistently have problems with like "marriage" and "license" (don't ask... seriously, I have a mind block on those words). But would it help to have them speld maireg and lisens?
I love good grammar as well, and have watched it get kicked to the curb over the past decade or two. Frustrates the snot out of me. Seriously.
Our kids are not stupid -- but we're letting them become lazy.
Very, very sad.

My friend who is a teacher is behind easier spelling, but not officially. We started teaching a phonics program this year and she was just in the dark. Most words have rules, but she just doesn't know them.
And you're right about us letting our kids get lazy! (Collectively, not personally ;) )
I agree with you. One of my pet peeves is the "dumbing of America." By all means, let's make things easier on the kids so their self-esteem doesn't suffer. ARGH!!!
I've noticed over the years that those of us who learned to read through phonics are better spellers, overall, than those who learned to read under the "see and say" method. For some reason, the schools periodically switch back and, for the life of me, I don't understand!
Okay... enough of this. I have to get to plotting Fiona. BTW, I think she's going to figure in a short story I'm working on as well. The girl is trying to take over my life!

Do NOT get me started on the dumbing down of America. The whole concept pisses me off too much. So I'll just say a hearty "amen, sister!!!" and leave it at that. :)
