Dakota Does Good

There is magic in long-distance friendships. They let you relate to other human beings in a way that goes beyond being physically together and is often more profound. ~Diana Cortes

We had a busy, fun day yesterday. An old neighbor was in town and stopped by with her two boys. They are so funny, and so completely different in demeanor. The oldest (who is just over a year younger than DD) is loud, extroverted, not shy in the least, confident and funny. We'll call him Boy1. The younger of the two (who is two years younger than his brother) is quiet (he actually has some speech problems, and had to go through therapy), introverted, and far less confident. He's also mildly afraid of dogs. He is, of course, Boy2.

When they showed up, I let Dakota out. When she lived here, I had my other (much larger) dog and they never had problems -- but Boy2 was only a toddler when they left, and has apparently had some bad episodes with dogs jumping and knocking him over, so he refused to get down. His mom carried him inside, where he sat on my breakfast bar.

But, Dakota showed just what a fabulous dog she is -- and proved to me again that she'd make a good therapy dog. She settled right down when I asked, just laid quietly on the floor and didn't move. Finally, after much thought and evaluation, Boy2 got down and joined in with DD and Boy1 playing. When Dakota STILL didn't get up, he got brave and petted her. At this point, I grabbed some treats and put her through her dog and pony show (sit, shake, high five, bow, down, roll over, etc). When I gave him treats to do the same, he fell in love.

From that point on, they were inseparable. He wanted Dakota with him everywhere. His mom almost cried and when Dakota finally had a break, so got down on the floor and hugged her.

It was great to see my friend again. I sure miss her and her kids...
