Booking It As A Family

I would be most content if my children grew up to be the kind of people who think decorating consists mostly of building enough bookshelves. ~Anna Quindlen, "Enough Bookshelves," New York Times, 7 August 1991

Booking it Through Thursday

When growing up did your family share your love of books? If so, did one person get you into reading? And, do you have any family-oriented memories with books and reading? (Family trips to bookstore, reading the same book as a sibling or parent, etc.)

Yes... and no.

My oldest brother? A big time reader... Me? A big time reader. The kinds in between (four of them)... not so much. Weird? Yes. But then, I've never claimed to come from an entirely normal family, LOL.

My mom did use books as a reward -- those Little Golden Books, remember? And I'm not certain, but I may have been reading in utero. I seriously can't remember a time I didn't read.

Absolutely, I shared books with my mom (my brother -- now an astro-physicist -- was all about science fiction, which was okay, but I did like to branch out). That's half the fun, isn't it? Reading and talking about books? Maybe that's why I had to do something like LASR.
==========================

Speaking of books, I got the cover for one of the three most recently contracted stories. This one is a "yellow rose" -- a cowboy story. Cute cover, huh?

Here's the blurb:

Returning to Wyoming after a six-year absence, Jake Langley finds more than just changes in the now run down family ranch. His warm feelings for a former girlfriend have cooled, and he finds himself drawn to her sister and his former best friend, Emily. His discovery of the sisters' well-kept secret, however, upsets his long-term plans and sets duty against his heart's desire. Now, four hearts and four lives will be changed, forever.
==============================

So, yesterday... I was a little melancholy because my mother, with whom I am very close, and who lives in a apartment over my garage (and has lived with us for thirteen years), has advised me that she can't do another winter here in the frozen north and is winging it back out to California. Home. Permanently. Three thousand miles away.

I'll miss her. So will my DD.

============================

You Are a Carousel

You are young at heart and a truly playful person. No one would ever accuse you of taking life too seriously.

You are definitely in things for the fun. You find joy easily, and you are often building up anticipation for your next adventure.

In relationships, you tend to want to be babied and taken care of.

And while you may be a bit high maintenance, you are incredibly loyal.

Your life is simple and satisfying. Each day you treat yourself to something you enjoy.

You have a lot of emotional attachments, and experiences are extra vivid to you.

You tend to be nostalgic and sentimental. The past is important to you.

Comfortable around all living things, you have a special connection to animals and children.

At your best, you are whimsical, free spirited, and creative.

Even if your schemes seem a bit strange, they usually work out wonderfully.

At your worst, you are spoiled, demanding, and impossible to satisfy.

You've been known to act like a brat if you aren't getting your way!

Okay... some of this is right on, but some is so far off it's laughable. I'll let you guess which is which.

What ride are you?

I was so lucky that my mother shared with me her love of reading. Unlike parents who allow TV to be the babysitter, she let the library be my babysitter! She'd drop me off after school and I'd stay until she was done with work. It was awesome.

I'm sorry to hear about your mother. It's difficult to separate like that. :(

That's a cute cover, Marianne!

Even though my parents are not readers, they do encourage me and my siblings to read. I started falling in love with books when I laid eyes on one of Enid Blyton's books for The Famous Five series.

Happy BTT!

Cute cover!

It's not odd that some of your siblings weren't readers, my brothers aren't either.

Sorry to hear your Mom's leaving.

On the quiz: true-- comfortable around all living things, special connection to animals and children, you are creative, and.. I LOVE this one "even if your schemes seem a bit strange, they usually work out wonderfully." I'm claiming that one for LASR :-)

Off to do mine...

My Mom was never much of a reader - except for information on "how-to". I, on the other hand, am a voracious reader. My husband (also book-resistant) gets rather perturbed at my propensity to read EVERYTHING, even cereal boxes.

I too am a carousel, BUT I am not high maintenance, I hate being babied (unless I'm sick), I'm not terribly sentimental, and I am not spoiled, demanding, and impossible to satisfy.

Actually, I'm quite easy to get along with - just give me chocolate and little bit of space and I'm fine.

Lovely cover, and again, I'm sorry you'll be losing your mom to other climes...

Sorry to hear about your mom. But another reason to head west, perhaps?

Love the quote!

I love the cover! I'm no so fond of cowboy stories but that one made me want to grab it and enjoy ^_^

The quote got me nodding too hihi

I'm also sorry to hear about your mom moving away. But still, you'd get to visit, right? And then seeing her again would be better because you missed her.

Isn't it weird how families have such different personalities? One of my brothers is a big reader....the other never picked up a book!

Nice answer!

Happy Thursday!

I guess that means you'll have to move to California and be my neighbor, eh?

Just wanted to let you know you won my contest. I'll be bringing your copy of Lottery, by Patricia Wood, back from Maui. Let me know if there's anything special you'd like her to say when she signs (and whether you want it Marianne or Maria).

*hugs* about your mom moving back to California.

I got Carousel, too.

Really nice cover! Congrats!

Sorry about Mom moving away...I'll second Tori's hugs.

You read in utero...LOL!!! I wonder if I did too because I picked up on reading really fast. Or was it because my aunt hovered?

Love the bookshelf quote!

Funny thing about my family, all three of us grew up to be readers in our spare time. We regularly swap books among ourselves in the family.

I'm sorry your mother will be moving. But, you can visit, right?

I'm sorry that you're mom is moving.

I like the cover and blub.

I grew up surrounded by books. My mom was a voracious reader. As soon as we were able to write our names, we had a library card and we took out as many books as our little arms could carry.

In the quiz, I'm a carousel.

I love the quote, Marianne! And the cover is cute. :)

It's always great to have siblings who share your passion of reading.

Happy reading!

I remember those Little Golden Books! I've got tons of it that were passed on from my older cousins and other relatives, and I've passed them on to my younger siblings too.
