All's Fair...and Booking It

“People rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they are doing.” - Dale Carnegie

The DD and I are going to the Deerfield Fair today. This is the largest fair in New Hampshire, but for someone who grew up in California and regularly attended the California State Fair (NH doesn't have a "state" fair... how weird is that?), I still laugh when I see how worked up folks are about this little gathering.

Regardless, my DD loves it and waits ALL YEAR to go. I was originally afraid it would be a wash-out because rain is expected, but now they've changed it to "afternoon thunderstorms". I hope that's true and it holds off. Cross your fingers for us, please.

So, except for what I get done this morning, I won't be working on the LASR website or my own site or edits.

I am probably going to have the shakes by noon. Withdrawal is an ugly thing.

============================

I almost forgot to Book It! Yikes! How is that possible?

Buy a Friend a Book Week is October 1-7 (as well as the first weeks of January, April, and July). During this week, you’re encouraged to buy a friend a book for no good reason. Not for their birthday, not because it’s a holiday, not to cheer them up–just because it’s a book.

What book would you choose to give to a friend and why?

And, if you’re feeling generous enough–head on over to Amazon and actually send one on its way!

I can't believe it's almost that time again! I try to participate in BAFABW every year... and will do so again (If I remember -- it is, after all, an ENTIRE week away!).

Many of my friends have Amazon wish lists, so that's easy. In the past, I've bought two people books during BAFABW AND have given away gift certificates here. It's fun, and a reason to shop... what more could you ask for?

As far as WHICH book? That really depends on who I'm giving to, doesn't it? I'm not going to by a sweet romance for my friend who prefers Stephen King -- I might buy her a romantic suspense (ala Holly Lisle or Linda Howard), but certainly not a Jenny Crusie book. We all like different stuff -- so I'd have to take that into account.

And, yes, come back on Oct 1st to see what I'll be giving away then. I'll have to give it some thought.

You Are A Fir Tree

You love anything beautiful, and you have extraordinary taste.
And while it's hard for you to trust, you care deeply for those close to you.
You are a social butterfly, and you have many friends.
You handle stress well - and you are a master at relaxing after a hard day.
Overall, you are modest, talented, unselfish, and very reliable.

Social butterfly....HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Master at relaxing??...... HAHAHAHAHAHA*snort*HAHA

I actually really like the county fairs around here. They're very New Englandy. I used to go to the Cheshire Fair, which I'm sure is minute even compared to the Deerfield Fair. Before the age of 11 I grew up on the Minnesota State Fair, so I know big fairs too.

Have you tried the Big E down in the Springfield Mass area? That's a pretty decent sized fair. I think it's wrapping up this weekend.

I'm off to write now.

I've never been to a country or state fair. What am I missing? I bet it's a fun gathering.

Enjoy yourself at the fair.

You Are A Weeping Willow Tree

You are a dreamer, and you're into almost any kind of escapism.
Restless and capricious, you love to travel to exotic places.
You are easily influenced by others, as long as they don't pressure you.
You tend to suffer in love until you find that one loyal, steadfast partner.
An empathetic friend, you love to make others smile and laugh.

As you know, we've hitting the Maine fairs circuit this year showing goats. Our fave? Blue Hill. It's very agricultural and quaint.

This Saturday the State of Maine Cooperative Extension is paying our way as 4-Hers here in podunk, backwoods Maine to attend the "Big E" in Springfield, Mass. 5 hours there and 5 hours back on a fancy-pants tour bus for 7 hours of unbridled fun (or so they say).

This is the BIG fair that encompasses ALL the New England states. I'm not sure it will be worth a 10 hour round trip, but it's free, so we'll give it a shot. Besides, I can count it as a schoolday; field trip, you know!

BTT- Yeah, I think it depends on the person too.

See, normally it depends on the person for me. But for this one... well, I guess it's a combo of having friends with at least some traits in common, and having found a book that's surprisingly universal in its appeal.

Have fun at the fair! I haven't been to one in years. Oh--I just remembered funnel cakes...now I'm not going to be happy with my morning toast. *sigh*

Good thing my friends have wish lists, too, aside from the fact that we pretty much have something in common when it comes to tastes in books.

I wish I had your job! ^_^

Happy BTT, Marianne!

True!

One of my friends can't read poetry. So I can't gift her anything to do with poetry.

She bought me A Poetry Handbook by Mary Oliver recently as she knows I love poetry!

I like your answer to the BTT! I think I answered very similarly!! It's amazing how much "book" people think alike!

HAve fun at the fair! I won a blue ribbon at the AZ state fair and that was such a thrill!

Hope the weather held for you!

It was also Banned Book week, this week.

I miss the CA state fair, it was HUGE! Our state has one as well, but we've never been. Our local county has a fair as well, it's sort of small. Fairs make me think of candy apples. *g*

For your quiz, I am a Pine Tree: "You love agreeable company, peace, and harmony.
Compassionate and friendly, you love to help others.
A natural poet, you have a very active imagination.
You are very soft on the inside - needing affection and reassurance.
You can fall in love deeply, but you will leave if you feel betrayed." Hmmm, not far off.

Have a wonderful evening!

I love the idea of giving someone a book they might not pick for themselves. It might help broaden their horizons, which is good for us all.

I agree with you, Marianne! Everyone has their reading preferences, so it's not easy to just buy a certain book for anyone. That's why book vouchers are great! :)
