It's An Acquired Taste

I believe humans get a lot done, not because we're smart, but because we have thumbs so we can make coffee. ~Flash Rosenberg

The other day, I was gabbing with one of the wonderful ladies who helps me with the LASR/WC/Aurora site and said something about her getting another cup of coffee. She mentioned that she didn't drink it, had never gotten to where she liked the taste. She'd tried to learn in college (need that caffeine for exam cram, right?) but hated the taste.

I agreed and said, "It's definitely an acquired taste."

DD has mentioned similar thoughts about beer and wine. My DH has a friend who makes his own beer, and it's usually VERY dark. We don't drink much here at our casa, but once in a while, DH will crack a bottle. I'm not a huge beer drinker, and always the lighter stuff (though there was a pub in Downtown Sacramento that served an amazing apple beer... mmmm...), so even to me this stuff smells rank. DD agreed and asked how Daddy could stand drinking it.

I said, "It's an acquired taste."

And it got me to thinking about how we force ourselves to do something at least somewhat distasteful in order to get used to it.

I learned to drink coffee in high school. I was born in the dark ages, before they gave free refills on soda pop (calling it both so folks from around the country will understand... though I suppose I should add "coke" in there for those of you south of the Mason Dixon line -- I'm told "coke" is soda/pop and "co-cola" is Coke. Yes?), so when my friends and I hung out at the local Denny's (yep... that was the hang out for the drama crowd), we'd order one BIG batch of cheese fries with water and coffee -- because coffee had free refills.

I'd dump cream and sugar in there 'til it was all but a milkshake, but I learned to really like the flavor of it. Even today, I'll frequently drink decaf just because of the taste. But it took a lot of getting used to.

I think this holds true to all sorts of things in life: exercise, chores, work and, yes, even writing.

For me, writing isn't the tough part. It's editing. I hate editing with an all-consuming passion. I know there are some out there who LOVE it (*cough-Charity-cough*), but I despise it. So, I do my best to get the first draft pretty close to right the first time.

I have the habit of going back over everything I've written before I start the new stuff -- which can be a problem when writing time is at a premium -- but often there are changes I need to make because of something that's been added, or just general additions or subtractions that I decided on. Adding more color, taking out a dull scene, finding typos. It all happens as I go back through. And because I haven't finished the first draft, it feels less like "editing" and more like "writing" to me.

Hey, it works. And it's how I acquired a taste for editing. Maybe, like my beer preferences, it's editing-light?

What are somethings you do that you had a acquire a taste for?

Yesterday I moved crushed rock. A lot of crushed rock. We ordered two yards, and when it came I thought, "Heck, that's not so much." Boy was I wrong! About thirty wheelbarrows full later, I'd finished covering the ground under the deck about 2" deep and still hadn't gotten but about half of the rock gone. I was exhausted, had a headache from whacking my head on the deck a half dozen times, and couldn't face the rest. It's in a pile for me to tackle today (it's going behind all the gardens next to the house that have a little rock in them, but need another 4" or so). Whee.

Then, we helped out at beginning agility last night. It's so funny -- the little dogs in there are pretty much fearless. There's a Papillon and a Dachshund who are Superdogs, flying up and down the obstacles, over the see-saw, through the chute... just incredible.

Then there's the biggest dog in class: the pit bull. And he's afraid of everything. He'll do the jumps, but do NOT ask him to do any of the contact obstacles. Not even the easy ones. The problem is, he's being rehabbed so, although he's 95% people friendly, it IS possible to push him too far, so we haven't been able to, well ... PUSH him. Normally, the way you get a dog to learn that the frame or walk won't hurt him is to push him right over a few times.

But... ha. Last night his owner came in with the dog and a muzzle. So, poor pooch was manhandled to death. I'm telling you what -- pushing him over the frame was almost as much work as moving 30 wheelbarrows full of rock. He'd plant those feet and he is STRONG. I'll give him this, though: he never even ONCE got snippy at all, never tried to nip us or complain in any way that was a negative reaction. He's really amazingly good-natured for a dog that has a rep for not being good-natured.

And he went over that frame twice under duress, with three of us pushing him over. And then, I swear you could hear it click in his head: "Hey, not only does this NOT hurt, but when I'm done they pat me and tell me I'm good and give me treats!" and over he went a couple more times on his own.

Next week: The walk-it.

I really enjoy helping out in class. So does DD. I think she's considering a future in dog-training...me, too, actually! LOL...

Dislike DST

A morning without coffee is like sleep. ~Author Unknown

I hate DST. HATEHATEHATE it... It's utterly outdated and should be discontinued. This message will repeat in October.

====================

Woke up with a wicked case of heartburn so bad I'm not having coffee. So, if my post seems a bit cranky and odd, that's why! I never had heartburn EVER until I was pregnant -- now I get it fairly regularly... is it cuz I'm getting older? -- and Rolaids (et al) are disgusting and I can't take them. I use papaya enzyme and it usually helps, but I got a new kind this last time, and they aren't working. :::grumble, grumble:::

Anyone else know natural remedies for heartburn?

It's raining here. I'm relieved, actually, since it was snowing last night. I worried I'd be waking up to two feet of snow. Instead, I have a river running down my front lawn and little creeks everywhere in my yard.

I bundled up in raingear and put out my bird feeders first thing this a.m., bringing the dog with me. She's not particularly fond of rain, but I knew she'd go out if I was with her. She did, and did her business and then (even now I'm amazed at how good she is) came inside, took her treat (she gets one for coming in when she's off leash) and dropped it on the floor, then sat down.

It took me a good thirty seconds to realize what she was doing -- since the dawn of time, when she comes in and is wet, I make her sit on the rug inside the door while I dry her off. This time, I was soaking wet myself so hadn't said anything while I was getting out of my coat and boots.

And she still sat. She didn't run off with her treat to eat it on the couch, she waited. Without me saying anything.

I was so impressed.

Good dog.

Coffee, Soy Milk and JaNoWriMo

It is inhumane, in my opinion, to force people who have a genuine medical need for coffee to wait in line behind people who apparently view it as some kind of recreational activity. I bet this kind of thing does not happen to heroin addicts. I bet that when serious heroin addicts go to purchase their heroin, they do not tolerate waiting in line while some dilettante in front of them orders a hazelnut smack-a-cino with cinnamon sprinkles. ~Dave Barry

Today, I awoke and stumbled downstairs for coffee ... only to discover a horrifying fact: I am OUT OF CHOCOLATE SOY MILK.

Some people use cream. Some use regular milk. I use chocolate soy milk in my coffee, and nothing else quite does it for me.

I was devastated.

So, here I sit, drinking coffee with plain milk and a touch of hot cocoa powder and grimacing and feeling terribly off-kilter.

So... instead of a post here, I'll simply direct to you today's post at JaNoWriMo. If you click on the first link, it'll take you to my post only. The second, and you can see what everyone over there is up to.

Today's "to-do list":

Go to store for soy milk.

Everything else is negotiable.

Happy Saturday! Don't forget to turn the clocks ahead tonight (unless you're in one of the two places who don't observe this silliness)!

RE: Yesterday's post -- make belive, people, make believe! Y'all were so serious... goodness. Only a few folks really got into the swing of things. IRL, I would probably donate the book to a UBS or the library, too. BUT... after having read a really rotten story, I'd surely think of ways to dispatch it first.

I like Brandy's idea of using it in the litter box, and Invoker wanting to have a book BBQ on the author's lawn. Kim was good, too: take the book camping for use as a fire starter AND potty paper! Well done folks... *G*

Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy!

In Seattle you haven't had enough coffee until you can thread a sewing machine while it's running. ~Jeff Bezos

When I told DH my coffee pot was busted (and he tried to fix it, of course -- he's pretty darn handy, but this was beyond even him) he said, "Don't buy any more junk (it was a Target special, lol). Buy what you want and something that's going to last. Merry Christmas."

So... I didn't even stop at Target or WalMart... nope -- I went straight past them and on to Bed, Bath and Beyond. DD kept wanting me to get an espresso machine, lol. I have to admit to being tempted, but just didn't want to go there. Too much of a learning curve *G*.

So, after agonizing (the one thing DH did suggest was that I get something stainless) for quite a long time, and reading all the features (and the warranties!) and touching and caressing all the display models, I selected this (not my picture --it's from Cuisinart.com -- as a side note, does anyone else remember when Cuisinart meant food processor? "Can I use your Cuisinart?"... yanno, like "Kleenex" means facial tissue?):

**sigh** Isn't it beautiful? It grinds my beans (or would, if I had any... I've been grinding at the store because my coffee grinder also broke, some time ago, and I hadn't replaced it), it filters my water, it has a thermal carafe... my new love.

And, even better... it wasn't an arm and a leg. Just an elbow and my left heel.

========================

Yesterday, my "all promo, all the time" day didn't go as planned. It was DH's fault. And, once I download pictures, I'll tell you why.

*G*

Coffee (pot) Break

A morning without coffee is like sleep. ~Author Unknown

What do you do when you wake up at the crack of dawn, turn on the coffee pot and... nothing happens?

1. Cry.

2. Try to get your brain to think minus its first jolt of coffee.

3. Boil water on the stove.

4. Ladle boiling water into coffee pot filter basket while balancing it carefully over the carafe.

5. Watch the coffee drip slowly, agonizingly through the filter.

6. Drink.

Ahhhh.....

7. Make plans to go to the store immediately for new coffee pot.

Pix DD took of the flowers currently blooming outside:

Asters:

Marigolds (I plant them around my veggie garden, and didn't have the heart to pull them up when I took down the garden):

Chrysanthemums (as an aside -- I never understand why people don't actually PLANT the mums in their gardens here... they just plop pots all over the place and then throw them out. Mums DO come back every year -- they're like weeds... ah well, the frugal me will never understand):

Seedum:

Happy Saturday. I have today set aside for "promo" day -- today I work on all the stuff I need to do for me as an author to get my name out there. I'm going to work on creating bookmarks and possibly a trailer for "Kitchen Matches" and "Stiller Creek", and I might do some loop and blog hopping. We'll see. I don't honestly know how much time I'll have as Judy is going away for the weekend, and I'll have to be both of us at LASR.

That's Not Funny

The kind of humor I like is the thing that makes me laugh for five seconds and think for ten minutes. ~William Davis

I've been told by certain people that I can, in some instances, be amusing.

I think I may have even been amusing once or twice, here on this blog. Perhaps it would help if I start writing these entries at night or in the afternoon, and not first thing in the morning when my brain isn't firing on all synapses. Typically, I write my blog immediately following releasing the latest review at the LASR Reviews Blog, and then uploading the correct daily pages at the LASR Reviews website.

This all happens prior to getting even halfway through my first cup of coffee. I'm still sleep fuzzy, especially when my cat wakes me up, like she did yesterday by sharpening her paws (yes PAWS -- she's declawed -- and DON'T any of y'all who are freaky about declawing being torture leave a comment about it. I'm well aware of all the reasons you shouldn't declaw a cat. My reason for doing so was simple -- either she lost the claws, or she would lose her life. I think she's happy with the decision) on a box sitting in the hallway.

I sat up straight in bed at the noise, already hissing through my teeth for her to stop it. My DH doesn't like the cat much, so I try to keep her as quiet and obedient (yes, you may laugh here... she is, after all A CAT) as possible. Clearly, I've conditioned myself to the point that my own behavior is instinctive.

Anyway, it was only 3:50 a.m., but my heart was pounding (as was my head), so I arose, turned on the coffee pot and began my task. Fact is, yesterday's blog was written without so much as a sip of coffee, so I suppose I should be proud it was coherant.

Still, if you consider I am the type of writer to include characters spitting dead crickets for distance, or owning pet rats and letting them run loose in their house, you'd thing I could at least occasionally amuse you.

I apologize profusely. Apparently, (and Michele will attest to this, considering my nickname is "lame joke") I am only amusing in my writing. Perhaps I need the ability to edit. I'll come back tomorrow and make this post funnier.

So, I apologize. If you want amusing, you'll have to go to Jenny Crusie's blog. Or Rebecca James. Or Eileen Cook's.

Here? You'll get discussions of butterbabies WHO STILL DO NOT HATCH. They'll wait until Thursday or Friday because it will be RAINING. Or silly quizzes.

Is it possible I have bored folks to death, to the point they have moved on? I wonder... feel free to comment and reassure me that you are still there. Say hi. My writer's ego is fragile. I admit -- I am needy.

In the meantime, here is the aforementioned quiz (stolen borrowed from Charity:

Your Superpower Should Be Manipulating Electricity

You're highly reactive, energetic, and super charged.

If the occasion calls for it, you can go from 0 to 60 in a split second.

But you don't harness your energy unless you truly need to.

And because of this, people are often surprised by what you are capable of.

Why you would be a good superhero: You have the stamina to fight enemies for days

Your biggest problem as a superhero: As with your normal life, people would continue to underestimate you
