Homeschooling

A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops. ~Henry Brooks Adams

It's that time again ... the time when kids go back to school, and the time when -- if I take DD to run errands with me, she's asked, "Shouldn't you be in school?"

Seriously?

I told her I was going to make her a BIG RED BUTTON to wear that says:

I'M HOMESCHOOLED!!!

It's just not that uncommon anymore. Millions of kids are homeschooled in the United States. It's not weird, it's not illegal, it's not bad for kids. Homeschooled kids have friends, have brains (and better... know how to use them). They can speak intelligently, have many outside interests, and are quite well-rounded.

Yes, I get frustrated. Yes I get tired of idiots like Joy Behar saying stuff like this:

And so, I found this video that I loved... it is exactly what I would say had I thought to make a video on the subject.

In any case, yesterday's school day went well. DD didn't hate her day, which was good, and she woke up in a pretty darn good mood today.

Today, though, we have to run errands. Lots of them. Post office, library, UPS, grocery story and gas station. I have to fill up all the vehicles AND our gas cans because Earl is headed our way... they aren't sure where/if it's going to hit here, but if it does the winds where I am will be pretty brutal. We just want to be prepared in case we lose power (oh the joy).

So ... that's my day. Any big plans for you?

You Are an Indoor and Outdoor Person

You are equally comfortable indoors and outdoors - and you prefer a good mix of both.

You are fun loving and open to lots of activities. You are always up for trying something new.

Maybe you'll hike in the morning, read in the afternoon, swim after dinner, and take in a movie at night!

While you have a broad range of interests, you may have trouble turning these interests into passions. You're the type of person who likes to dabble.

Yep :-D

I love the homeschooling video. I'm going to pass it on to my god daughter who is homeschooling her three kids.

You Are an Indoor Person

You are the modern type, and you figure why be outside when you can have climate control?

It's hard to get you to go outside for more than a few minutes, but you probably enjoy a little it when you do.

Studies show that being outdoors can make us happier and healthier people. Consider giving nature a second chance.

Find one or two things you like to do outdoors and just do them! You can beat the feeling of a perfect day.

Hey, I do go outdoors.

Have a good Wednesday.

I think that someday the homeschooled kids are going to run the government. They will be the only ones who have used their brains to their full potential.

Loved the video.

I can't even listen to Joy Behar.

I know a few homeschool kids and I find them to be very intelligent and well adjusted. Do people not understand that they have to meet the same requirements that school schooled kids do? And in most cases go above and beyond? My hat off to you, Marianne, and others like you, for taking on such a responsibility.

Geez, how rude and inconsiderate of Joy Behar and others.Obviously, they were not homeschooled. I thought of homeschooling our children, but was afraid I wouldn't be disciplined enough to do it. I've heard colleges love homeschooled kids and know they have received an outstanding education.

Don't forget to stock up on water. After Rita, we were without water for almost a week.

We were without electricity for three weeks.

So far Earl doesn't look like it's coming in for a direct hit, but that doesn't mean it won't cause damage.

Good luck.

I've heard some of those over the years and have the web page of the magazine that first printed those in my favorites. I do try to stay inside during the school hours here, but that's just ingrained from when we iived in CA.
The social/socialization aspect always infuriates me. My kids aren't lacking because they're not in schools infested with violence, drugs, bullying or lack of one-on-one time with teachers who have classrooms stuffed with too many children.

You Are an Outdoor Person
You love spending time outside, and it's likely you've crafted your lifestyle to maximum outdoor activities.
You probably live in an excellent climate (or intend to). And you are also probably physically fit.
Of all the types, you are the most likely to be the happiest. Being outdoors really raises people's spirits.
So go ahead and spend as much time outside as you'd like. Just remember to protect yourself from the sun!

Hm, sort of. I do love to spend time outside when it's not hot and humid.

I hope your day goes well and you're able to complete your errands and stay safe!
