Monday Morning Meme and Armchair Quarterbacking

"Keep away from people who belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great." — Mark Twain

So... it's fourth and long, with the potential of being a 46 yard field goal for the Patriots. They opt to try for the first down (note to Bill Bellicheck: Are you out of your ever-loving mind??) and miss. I turn to my DH and say, "Bet the Pats lose by a field goal."

Bet Mr. Bill is a bit unhappy with his decision making abilities (not to mention the offensive line that couldn't keep the Giants defense off of Tom Brady -- who did his best in really bad circumstances).

Okay. All done. It's not like I'm a Patriots fan (despite being stuck deep in Pats territory). I <3 the 49ers (I know, I know, you can stop snickering now). Still, it would have been neat to see the Pats have a perfect season.

=======================

1. As a child, with whom did you have more fun - mom or dad? Why?

Fun? I'd probably have to say my dad. My mom and dad were divorced when I was very young, and mom had custody, so she and I did more "day-to-day" stuff (not that mom wasn't fun, but she also had to, yanno, discipline me and what-not). Dad, OTOH, since he only had me on the occasional weekend or school holiday always made sure we had cool stuff scheduled. AND, on the way to his place we always stopped at the grocery store and stocked up on junk food that Mom didn't allow: Lucky Charms (or Captain Crunch or Cocoa Pebbles... mmmm), soda pop, etc.

Plus, he had a pool at his apartment and I was a serious waterbaby. And he'd pay me -- a dime a point for anything over 100 -- when we bowled.

I'd forgotten a lot of that. It was a good trip down memory lane.

2. When was the last time you purchased flowers for yourself? When was the last time you purchased flowers for someone else? What was the occasion?

I'm a very practical person and always think flowers, that are just going to die anyway, are rather a waste of hard-earned money. I'd rather have a plant. Or new clothes. Or books. Or, yanno, kitchen utensils.

The last time I bought flowers for myself was w-a-a-a-a-y back when I worked in California (so, hmmm... doing the math... about 15 years ago). There was a guy who sat on the street corner and sold bouquets for five dollars. I'd pick one up weekly for my desk.

The last time I bought flowers for someone? That would have to be about eight years ago, and I bought them for my friend, Cathy, out in California for her birthday. She's a quiet person, and often overlooked and I wanted her day to be special, so I had flowers sent to her AT WORK. Really, I should do that every year, but... yanno... flowers = waste of money. I just can't get past that.

3. Where is the perfect reading spot for you? Why?

Good grief. Anywhere. I'm not one of those people who wants a little reading nook with a table for my tea. I read anywhere and everywhere. I read when I'm cooking and often times when I eat. I read when I watch TV. I read in bed, on the potty, in the tub, and if the book was waterproof, I'd probably read in the shower. The perfect reading spot is wherever I am together with a good book.

4. (Other than “say you’re sorry”) Complete this line: Love is never having to … Please explain your answer.

Love is never having to ... worry about what your hair looks like in the morning.

I think that's self-explanatory.

=======================

So, if I stop writing the blog now, I'll have 45 minutes to work on my mystery! Woot!

========================

Today's random quiz:

You Are 4% Abnormal

You are at low risk for being a psychopath. It is unlikely that you have no soul.

You are at low risk for having a borderline personality. It is unlikely that you are a chaotic mess.

You are at low risk for having a narcissistic personality. It is unlikely that you are in love with your own reflection.

You are at low risk for having a social phobia. It is unlikely that you feel most comfortable in your mom's basement.

You are at low risk for obsessive compulsive disorder. It is unlikely that you are addicted to hand sanitizer.

Well, hey, that's always good to know...

It was a sad night. I generally don't watch football so I usually have no idea what's going on, but even I could tell that there was something lacking about the Pats last night. Where were they when Manning had the football? They should've watched the Giants with Brady and thought "hmm...maybe we should try that."

This is why I shouldn't watch.

I love cut flowers, but hate to spend the money - or constantly change the water before it smells. Your number 4 is so true.

Love it that you're working on your mystery! You go girl. :)

I love your answer to number 4. Very true!

I'm a 49er fan too, but we were thrilled here with the outcome last night. I didn't think the Pats deserved to be undefeated after the whole "cheating" thing earlier this season. Karma! That's for sure.

I don't buy myself flowers either, I keep thinking that they'll die and that yeah they were pretty to look at, but I have nothing left of my money. Then again, I can't seem to get my ivy in the kitchen to grow well, so......*g*

Your answer to #4 is perfect!

Have a good day and work on that mystery!

I'm a Giants fan, so I'm a totally happy camper this afternoon!

I just finished teaching (back to teaching during school hours on Mondays), so I'm going to try to get my writing in now.

This is waaaaay off today's topic, but this has come up (again) and it really makes me crazy.

For the past year, a girlfriend (published writer and publicist) has been writing a romance, her great american effort in 1st person, and she received this eMail:

"On page 3 of the newsletter, in the cream colored section, under the headline "The Black Velvet Seductions Wishlist February 2008" the second paragraph reads, "We do not accept any material written in third person. This is incorrect. We ONLY ACCEPT MATERIAL WRITTEN IN THIRD PERSON POINT OF VIEW. The sentence should have read, we do not accept any material written in first person point of view. Sorry for the error."

Why is romance the only genre mired in the tarpit of such pedantic rules? If the genre is to earn respect, shouldn't it treat works as literature instead of mere commodity? Could you dedicate a blog day to this topic?

As a NY fan, I'm thrilled that the Giants won, being underdogs and all.

I'm 8% abnormal.

Hi,
I did Monday Morning Meme with Karen too.
I love your answers, especially about never having to worry about your hair. Some days mine doesn't get comb until the afternoon. :)

I agree with the theory flowers are a waste of money. There is so much other stuff I would rather have.
